Malt, hops and a recipe in front of brewing tanks — an illustration

A flying brewery has no wings, and usually no brewhouse of its own either. What it does have is a name, a vision for its beer and recipes that are brewed using a partner brewery’s equipment. It is a way to make your own beer without first building a room full of stainless steel. Potmehúd is one of Prague’s breweries working this way, and has done so from the start.

Your own beer, without your own brewhouse

The Czech term “létající pivovar”, literally “flying brewery”, describes a way of brewing rather than a beer style. You may also hear “gypsy brewery” or “nomadic brewery”. The brand arranges to brew its batches at an established brewery with the right equipment. Exactly how the two work together can vary: the recipe, brewing, fermentation and care of the finished beer all matter. A name above a door tells you very little about what is in your glass.

For anyone choosing a beer, its individual description is more useful than guessing how it tastes from the type of brewery behind it. A brewery without its own premises can make a hoppy IPA or something entirely different. And two beers of the same style can taste quite different thanks to their ingredients and recipes.

Potmehúd: a Prague story with Slovak roots

Samuel and Libor, two Slovaks based in Prague, founded Potmehúd in March 2018. The name loosely translates as “rascal”, and its opening letters are also a nod to Prešov, Samuel’s hometown. From the beginning, they were drawn to top-fermented beers and less familiar styles. Experimenting comes with the territory, but every batch still has to stand on its own merits.

Today, the brewery is run by Potmehúd s.r.o., with Samuel as its sole owner. Libor remains a co-founder of the brand. Read more about us.

Past batches and what is available now

Our beer guide introduces recipes and styles from Potmehúd’s history. It is a place to explore, rather than a promise that every past brew is still in stock. To place an order, browse our current selection of canned beers.

If you are choosing for the first time, our guide to IPA, APA and NEIPA is a good place to start. Once your order arrives, a little care with beer storage will help you enjoy it at its best.
